Help With Snoring

Get help with snoring by discovering the causes and cures for snoring.

The effects of snoring can impact on the quantity and quality of your sleep. Inadequate sleep can result in daytime fatigue, irritability and an increase in health problems. If your snoring is so loud that your bed mate can't sleep, you may end up banished from the bedroom.

If it is getting in the way of a good night’s sleep for you and your partner, snoring can contribute to marital problems. Snoring may be an occasional problem, or it may be habitual. If you want to stop snoring, it is important to consider the cause and severity of your snoring.

Causes For Snoring

Snoring occurs when air flows past relaxed throat tissues, this causes the tissues to vibrate as you breathe, creating the snoring sound. Snoring is most common in REM (rapid eye movement) sleep, because of the loss of muscle tone characteristic of this stage of sleep.

As you move from lighter sleep to deeper sleep, your soft palate (the muscles in the roof of your mouth), tongue and throat relax. When the tissues in your throat relax enough, they vibrate and your airway can become obstructed. As your airway becomes more restricted, the airflow becomes more forceful. Your snoring grows louder as tissue vibration increases.

A narrow throat, enlarged adenoids, an irregular palate or other physical traits which are a factor in snoring can be hereditary. Aging also causes your throat to becomes narrower, and for the muscle tone in your throat to decrease. And because men have narrower air passages than women, they are also more likely to snore.

Does Being Overweight Cause Snoring?

Does being overweight cause snoring? - It is true that obese people tend to snore more than those who are at their ideal weights, because fat that has been accumulated around the neck narrows the air passage.

But while the stereotype of a snoring person may be a middle-aged overweight man, the reality is that people who snore can have any body type. Thin people snore too and snoring in women is common. In fact the snoring woman makes up 40% of snoring adults.

Snoring in kids is almost always cause by enlarged tonsils and adenoids. A kid or toddler snoring could be an indication of swelling or inflammation of the air passage caused by allergies.

Do Ear Plugs Help With Snoring?

When using ear plugs to help with snoring, sound levels will be reduced to around 33 decibels; however, even if your ear canals are completely blocked, the bones inside your head will still conduct sound to the inner ear.

Heavy snoring is approximately 85 decibels, by using ear plugs, snoring is reduced to around 33 decibels. This is similar to the volume of a normal voice during conversation, however, light snoring would be reduced to a quiet whisper. That might be enough for you to sleep soundly. If so, then all you need are snoring ear plugs that you find comfortable.

The most common type are made from dense foam that can keep their shape for up to a year or more, even if used daily. Although, they are not generally comfortable for people who sleep on their sides. Wax ear plugs, popular because of their custom fit, are usually only effective for a few uses. But many people find them more comfortable than foam. Snoring earplugs made from silicone also tend to be more comfortable than foam, although some people find it difficult to mould them to the right shape.

Natural Treatments For Help With Snoring

Sleeping in separate bedrooms needn't be the solution for your snoring. There are many effective natural treatments to help with snoring depending on the cause. Discovering how to control snoring will improve your relationships, your health, and most importantly, your sleep.

Most importantly, stay away from sedatives; this is one of the most crucial, yet overlooked tips to help with snoring. Sleeping pills depress the central nervous system, and cause excessive relaxation of muscles, including your throat tissues. Anything that relaxes the tissues around the head and neck will tend to make snoring worse. And because sedatives dull the brain's ability to arouse from sleep, if you stop breathing due to obstructive sleep apnea, it may take longer for breathing to begin again.
